When did you first start thinking about surrogacy?
Surrogacy first crossed my mind when I was 19 years. I was so young so I wasn’t really considering it, but it was when I had first heard stories of women carrying for the LGBTQ community who couldn’t carry their own. I thought that was one of the coolest things I had ever heard of and remember thinking, maybe someday. Then when I was 25 and became pregnant for the first time, I ended up having a first trimester miscarriage. I was devastated and remember thinking that I might never be able to have children. I ended up being a lucky one, and was pregnant again, just a few months later. For me, it was a few months, for so many it can be years. I just knew that I wanted to help create a family for someone who is living in their worst nightmare.
Was there someone in your life who inspired you thinking about starting the process?
Not one person in particular, just the idea of people who couldn’t carry and how I wanted to help them. I had never met anyone who was a gestational carrier.
What were you most excited about with a potential surrogacy journey?
I was most excited about being matched! I remember getting the email, briefly telling me about my IP, and I was ecstatic. Before the first video chat where we met I was getting butterflies (the good kind)! After that first meeting, within 10 minutes we had both emailed ConceiveAbilities to say that we for sure wanted to go through with our journey! I delivered my surro-baby on October 1st, and we still have the best relationship.
What were you most unsure/anxious about with a potential surrogacy journey?
I remember feeling so nervous about the first heartbeat ultrasound. This is the day they’ve been waiting for forever! I was so scared it would be bad news. Thankfully, we had a smooth journey and everything went perfectly.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your family.
My husband and I are high school sweethearts, celebrating 13 years together, and we have the most amazing little 4 year old. We are a family that loves board games, video games, Pokémon and all things superheroes.
Anything else that you'd like to share?
Surrogacy was one of the best decisions I have ever made! The relationship I formed with my intended parent is beyond special and nothing else can compare to that.
Thanks for sharing your surrogacy story, @Jess!
